How to remove stains by type
Sunscreen on a white collar, lipstick on a sleeve, red wine at a dinner: each stain type needs its own first move. Blot, never rub. Sunscreen and oily makeup lift with a little dish soap or makeup remover worked in gently; blood needs cold water; wine and coffee need a cold rinse from the back then liquid detergent. Keep treated clothes out of the dryer until the stain is gone.
Why it matters: The right first move in the first hour saves the garment.
Steps
- Blot the fresh stain with a clean cloth from the outside in.
- Read the care label and test any treatment on an inside seam.
- For foundation, lipstick or sunscreen, work in a drop of dish soap or oil-free makeup remover with a fingertip, rinse, and repeat.
- For blood, rinse from the back of the fabric with cold water and a little soap.
- For wine, coffee or tea, flush with cold water from the back, then rub in liquid detergent.
- For deodorant marks, rub the fabric against itself gently when dry, or treat with detergent before washing.
- Wash as the label allows, then air dry and check in daylight before any heat.
Common mistakes
- Rubbing hard, which spreads the stain.
- Hot water on blood.
- Tumble drying before checking the stain is gone.
- Mixing bleach with other cleaners.
