Emergency wallet cards

Seven pocket-sized cards for the moments when there is no time to look anything up: hands-only CPR, choking, stroke signs, a grease fire, the jump start order, a gas smell and a water leak. They are reminders, not training: in an emergency call your local emergency number, 911 in the US, and take a certified class to practice. The full steps are on each skill page in the master list, and the guides tie them together.

Cut along the dashed lines. Each card is about the size of a bank card; fold it once or slip it into a clear sleeve.

The cards

Hands-only CPR

  1. Not breathing normally? Call 911 on speaker.
  2. Send someone for a defibrillator.
  3. Heel of hand, center of chest, other hand on top.
  4. Push at least two inches deep, 100 to 120 a minute.
  5. Let the chest rise. Keep going until help takes over.

Adult choking

  1. Cannot talk, cough or breathe? Get 911 called.
  2. Lean them forward: five firm back blows.
  3. Then five inward and upward thrusts above the navel.
  4. Alternate five and five until it comes out.
  5. Unresponsive? Lower to the floor and start CPR.

Stroke signs

  1. Face: does one side droop in a smile?
  2. Arms: does one sink when both are raised?
  3. Speech: slurred or wrong words?
  4. Also sudden vision loss, imbalance or severe headache.
  5. Call 911 at once and note the time it started.

Grease fire

  1. Never water.
  2. Burner off if you can reach it safely.
  3. Slide a lid or baking sheet over the pan from the side.
  4. Leave it covered until completely cool.
  5. Spreading? Get out, close the door, call 911 outside.

Jump start order

  1. Both cars off. Cracked or leaking battery? Stop.
  2. Red: dead battery plus, then good battery plus.
  3. Black: good battery minus.
  4. Last black: bare metal on the dead car.
  5. Start the good car, wait, then the dead one.
  6. Remove clamps in reverse order.

Gas smell

  1. Rotten egg smell? Leave now with people and pets.
  2. Touch no switches, appliances or doorbells.
  3. Light nothing. Start no car in the garage.
  4. Call the gas company or 911 from well away.
  5. Stay out until they say it is safe.

Water leak

  1. Close the small valve behind the fixture first.
  2. Clockwise to close.
