In an emergency, call your local emergency number, 911 in the US, first. Reading a page is not training: take a certified class and practice on a manikin.

Steps

  1. Sign up for your area's emergency alerts and follow official forecasts.
  2. Charge phones, power banks and rechargeable flashlights.
  3. Fill clean containers with drinking water and refill any prescriptions due soon.
  4. Bring in or tie down outdoor furniture, planters and bins.
  5. Put flashlights, medicines, documents and your go-bag in one place near your safe room.
  6. Pick a safe room: an interior room with no windows on the lowest floor that will not flood; if officials order an evacuation, leave.
  7. Leave early if officials order an evacuation, and tell your trusted contact where you are going.
  8. Call your local emergency number, 911 in the US, only for emergencies, and take a certified class to practice first aid before the season starts.
