Steps

  1. Add weight-bearing activity most days: brisk walking, dancing, stair climbing or hiking.
  2. Do strength training for the major muscle groups at least twice a week, starting light.
  3. Eat calcium-rich foods such as dairy, fortified plant milks, canned fish with bones and leafy greens.
  4. Get some daylight, and ask your clinician whether your vitamin D needs checking.
  5. Practice balance, such as standing on one leg near a counter, to lower fall risk.
  6. Ask about a bone density scan at 65, or earlier if you have risk factors.
  7. Make your home safer against falls: clear floors, good lighting and a nonslip bath mat.
