Steps

  1. Prepare your one-page list before the visit.
  2. Describe impact, not just feeling: this pain wakes me three nights a week.
  3. Ask: what do you think is causing this, and what else could it be?
  4. Ask: what has been ruled out, and how?
  5. If a test or referral is declined, ask calmly for the reason and for it to be noted in your record.
  6. Ask for a copy of visit notes and results through the patient portal.
  7. If you still feel unheard, book a second opinion; you do not need permission.
  8. Bring a friend to take notes if appointments feel overwhelming.
