Steps

  1. Stop flushing; if the bowl is close to overflowing, lift the tank lid and push the flapper down, or turn the valve behind the toilet clockwise.
  2. Put on gloves and lay old towels around the base.
  3. Use a flange plunger, which has a soft extra cup that fits into the hole.
  4. Seat it fully over the hole with enough water to cover the cup; add water if needed.
  5. Push down gently first to push out air, then push and pull firmly about a dozen times without breaking the seal.
  6. When the water drains with a gurgle, flush once and watch.
  7. If it is still blocked after several tries, use a toilet auger, cranking gently through the bowl.
