Steps

  1. Gather documents from drawers, folders and email into one pile.
  2. Sort into keep forever, keep for years, and shred.
  3. Keep forever: birth certificate, social security card, passport, marriage or divorce papers, wills, deeds and titles.
  4. Keep for years: tax returns and supporting records, and active insurance policies and contracts.
  5. Store originals in a fire and water resistant box or file at home.
  6. Scan each one and store the scans in encrypted cloud storage or an encrypted drive.
  7. Write a one-page list of what is where, and tell one trusted person where to find the box and the list.
  8. Review once a year.
